Platinum is 35 times more rare than gold, and is available to collectors and investors in the form of the American Platinum Eagles, minted by the US Mint since 1997.
Like the gold Eagle series, the platinum Eagle is available in 1 ounce, ½ ounce, ¼ ounce and 1/10 ounce coins, with face values of $100, $50, $25 and $10 respectively. It is minted in brilliant, uncirculated, and proof varieties.
Even though platinum is many times more rare than gold, platinum is currently priced only about twice that of the yellow metal, which is very close in chemistry to platinum. Its increasing popularity in jewelry, its incorporation into industrial materials, plus use in coinage by several countries around the world, has created a growing demand for platinum.
